TITLE:   Audiologist

 

BASIC FUNCTION:          

 

Provide a comprehensive assessment of candidates for admission to the School as well as a continuing assessment and recommendations for enrolled students.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

         Administer comprehensive audiological evaluation of incoming students and enrolled students ages birth to 21,
       including diagnosis and prognosis. Interpretation of results and follow up recommendations for re-evaluations.

         Work closely with staff in the development of I.E.P.'s relative to short and long term auditory function and training
       goals.  Participate in MDT conferences and program reviews to present up to date audiological findings and the
       implications on learning.

         Work as part of an inter professional team with speech language pathologists, teachers, psychologists, social
       workers and other school professionals providing educational instruction to children.

         Make recommendations for sensory aids,  FMs auditory access strategies to SLPs, OT, PTs Teachers, Assistant   

       Principals and other appropriate staff members.

         Administer hearing aid evaluations, including recommendations for optimal hearing aids or FM systems.  Select, fit and
       evaluate effectiveness of amplification.  Make and monitor earmold fit.

         Assess auditory access with cochlear implants via standardized tests that are age appropriate.

         Write evaluation reports and recommendations that address students overall learning goals. Use computerized IEP
       system to submit reports.

         Assist in the schools intake/admissions services.

         Monitor all FM (both personal and sound field) equipment and ensure all technology is functioning appropriately and
       is being utilized for maximal benefit. Prepare annual reports re: technology status needs.

         Advise administration and staff in the selection and purchase of auditory training equipment.  Instruct in the use of FM
       equipment and trouble shoot problems when required.

         Provide ongoing training to all staff about technology.

         Collaborate with other health professionals and teachers with respect to auditory goals and strategies that will
       maximize goals in the classroom and in the therapy room.

         Act as the liaison with other facilities by providing information when requested

         Participate in research designs that are approved by the local Institutional Review Board or those that are
       collaborative in nature with outside agencies.

         Participate in parent guidance and counseling programs serving as a resource in all areas related to audiology and
       auditory access.

         Perform minor hearing aid repairs.  Refer complicated problems to an outside service.

         Attend meetings, conferences and seminars to ensure that the school is current with newest developments in the
       field of audiology.

         All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

         New York State Audiology License.

         New York State Hearing Aid Dispensing License

         Certified by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association.

         Experience working with the profoundly deaf and some experience in an educational environment.

         Knowledge of hearing aids and F.M. technology.

         Knowledge of ASL and ability to communicate effectively through sign language. 

         Understanding of role of the audiologist within a school for the deaf.

 

SALARY: Negotiable based on qualifications and experience
